Amangiri

“A minimalist monolith rising from the Utah desert, its sculpted stone walls merging into mesas that glow crimson at dusk.”

Our Review

Setting

Amangiri sits deep in Canyon Point on the vast Colorado Plateau, encircled by mesas and wind-sculpted sandstone. Reached by a four-hour drive from Las Vegas, the approach feels otherworldly; the last miles unfurl across silent desert before the resort appears to dissolve into the rock. The location places guests within easy reach of Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument, Zion National Park, the Grand Canyon, and Lake Powell, yet the immediate appeal is the solitude—900 acres of raw, cinematic terrain where night skies blaze and horizons seem to hover.

Design & Atmosphere

Anchored against a towering escarpment, the architecture is an ode to the landscape. Minimalist planes of sand-toned concrete frame the desert like a sequence of viewfinders, while the central pool traces the base of a natural rock outcrop, flowing toward a hot tub set at the cliff’s foot. The project, opened in 2009, was conceived by Marwan Al-Sayed, Wendell Burnette, and Rick Joy, who used mineral-rich mixes and low, horizontal forms to echo the geology rather than compete with it. The effect is serene, sculptural, and perfectly calibrated to the play of light and shadow throughout the day.

Suites

This property comprises just 34 suites arranged in two low wings off the main pavilion. Interiors are spare yet warm—pale concrete, timber, leather, and stone—so that eyes drift naturally to the panorama beyond floor-to-ceiling glass. Every suite opens to a private terrace with fireplace; several add plunge pools and sky terraces with daybeds for stargazing. Signature categories such as the Desert Pool and Mesa Pool Suites expand the footprint and elevate the sense of seclusion, while top-tier options introduce private swimming pools and extensive outdoor living areas. Functionally, the layout favors quiet privacy: courtyard entrances, generous storage, well-lit bathrooms, and thoughtful climate control that tames the desert’s extremes.

Dining

The culinary direction draws on the American Southwest with global inflections—think wood-fire cooking, blue-corn touches, green chiles, and produce sourced across the region. Days unfold easily thanks to the resort’s full-board structure: breakfast, lunch, and dinner for two per room are included (excluding alcoholic drinks). Guests can dine in the open-kitchen Dining Room beside the pool, opt for intimate set-ups such as Dinner on the Rocks tucked into sandstone walls, or venture to Camp Sarika for an alternate setting without sacrificing the same ingredient-led approach.

Wellness & Activities

The 25,000-square-foot Aman Spa is a destination unto itself. A Water Pavilion with sauna, steam, cold plunge, and a stepped warm pool anchors the circuit, while treatment rooms open to quiet terraces. Programming blends regional materials—Utah salts and clays—with restorative bodywork, movement, and meditation. Daily guided hikes and group wellness classes are included, and on-property trails lace across mesas to secret viewpoints. For adrenaline, the resort offers a network of via ferrata routes that turn the cliffs into accessible climbs; horseback rides trace old cattle paths; and, in cooler months, sunrise hot-air balloon flights lift off from the valley floor. Private air tours over the Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, and Monument Valley, and guided walks into nearby slot canyons round out an agenda that balances exertion with deep calm. A short drive away, Camp Sarika extends the experience in ten tented pavilions—each with a private plunge pool and access to all main-resort facilities—ideal for travelers seeking even more privacy.

Verdict

This accommodation is less a conventional resort than a precision instrument for experiencing desert silence. Design lovers will appreciate the intellectual rigor; wellness-minded guests will settle into the spa’s steady rhythm; and couples or small families will value the rare combination of privacy and ease. Rates are high and the journey remote, but the value lies in its focus: a distilled sense of place where architecture, service, and landscape converge to memorable effect.
