The Omnia

“A glass lift ascends through a rock tunnel to reveal minimalist suites with direct views of the Matterhorn.”

Our Review

Setting & Design

Carved into the cliff face above Zermatt’s rooftops, The Omnia occupies a dramatic perch on Auf dem Fels at roughly 1,650m, reached via a tunnel and rock-bored elevator that deposits guests directly into a calm, light-filled lobby. The aesthetic is a contemporary mountain lodge: clean lines, dark granite, and warm white oak shaped into bespoke furnishings by the late New York architect Ali Tayar. The result is understated and meticulous, privileging proportion and texture over spectacle, and framing the ever-present silhouette of the Matterhorn through expansive glazing.

Rooms & Suites

With just 30 rooms, including 12 suites, the accommodation feels intimate and deliberately individual—rooms have no numbers, and most open onto private balconies that overlook either village roofs or high alpine peaks. Materials are tactile and durable, lighting is thoughtfully layered, and storage is smoothly integrated. In the Roof Suite, a sculpted wooden bathtub, private sauna, and a Swarovski telescope underscore the retreat-like mood; design details extend to a wood-burning stove, an attic-style living room, and broad panorama windows. The circular Tower Suite places its lounge within the turret, pairing a fireplace and telescope with floor-to-ceiling views, while bedrooms across categories share crisp linens and generous wardrobes that make longer stays easy.

Dining

The culinary program is anchored in a seasonal, Alpine larder with a modern, largely vegetarian base that can be complemented by precisely chosen fish or meat. Evenings revolve around a five-course experience—reliably balanced in pacing and portion—and a wine list that is strong in Switzerland with depth in Burgundy and Bordeaux. Service is unhurried and quietly attentive, and seating in the pared-back dining room or by the fireplace sustains the property’s preference for relaxed elegance. For many, breakfast on the terrace is the moment that captures the lodge’s rhythm: generous without fuss, and framed by clear mountain air.

Wellness & Facilities

The spa continues the minimalist vernacular with a moodier palette and soft acoustics. An indoor pool slips outdoors through a glass opening, allowing swimmers to transition into the elements while maintaining a steady 30°C. Heat experiences include Finnish and bio saunas and floral and herbal steam rooms; outside, a whirlpool faces the village and the Matterhorn. Treatment rooms use Aesop and Farfalla products, and a compact gym fitted with Technogym equipment covers essentials. Between swims and saunas, guests tend to drift to the library for a quiet read; in select higher-category rooms, a small bourbon welcome nods to the lodge’s affection for considered rituals.

Access & Practicalities

Zermatt’s center is car-free, so arrivals typically combine train travel with an electric-vehicle transfer. From the pedestrian zone, the hotel’s tunneled entry and cliffside lift provide a memorable final approach and immediate sense of remove from village bustle. Once in residence, the layout is intuitive: a lobby flowing to terrace and library, vertical circulation that minimizes walking distances, and sun decks that catch light from early morning to late afternoon. It is a property for travelers who value design that recedes into comfort, precise but unobtrusive service, and consistent views that recalibrate the day—whether returning from the slopes or simply lingering by the fire.
